The Story Beneath The Story
I revisit Joseph Jacobs’s folk tale, 'The Story-teller at Fault.' It concerns a professional storyteller whose skilled ability, and deep obsession, is providing a king with a new narrative every night. This story ultimately made me wonder if the constant need to construct grand stories is truly a gift, or if it is a lifelong addiction, a desperate attempt to keep meaning alive.
Starting with the fable, I then move into a vivid personal memory of my friends and me on a lengthy, exhausting pilgrimage. The tension of the story, where the storyteller loses everything, mirrors the accidental hardships of the journey. In the Reflection, we pull it all together by naming this universal pattern: the necessity of laughing at failure to signal true growth.
